Curcumin & turmeric, honestly — real anti-inflammatory, real caveats
Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is one of the more legitimate herbal supplements — but also one of the most oversold. The honest headline: there’s a real, modest anti-inflammatory signal, hostage to a serious absorption problem that most of the hype ignores.
The real signal and the real problem
Curcumin gives turmeric its colour and is genuinely bioactive, with anti-inflammatory effects in the lab. But on its own it’s poorly absorbed and rapidly cleared, so very little reaches your bloodstream — which is why results depend heavily on the formulation (e.g. added piperine from black pepper) and dose.
So the honest question isn’t "does curcumin do anything?" but "does this product deliver enough of it to matter?"
What the evidence shows
Modest and inconsistent, not miraculous.
- It modestly lowers an inflammation marker — A meta-analysis of trials found curcuminoids significantly reduced circulating CRP, a marker of inflammation — a real but modest effect. (emerging)
- Results hinge on absorption and dose — Because plain curcumin is so poorly absorbed, outcomes vary a lot with formulation and dose, and the overall evidence is inconsistent. Grand claims (curing arthritis, preventing cancer) run far ahead of the data. (note)
What we still don’t know
- Does it change hard outcomes? Lowering an inflammation marker is not the same as preventing disease. Whether curcumin improves real clinical outcomes is unproven.
- The best form and dose Bioavailability-enhanced formulations differ widely; the optimal one isn’t settled.
