Green tea & EGCG, honestly — drink it, don’t megadose it
Green tea is a genuinely healthy drink — but the concentrated extract is a different, riskier product. The honest headline: drinking green tea has a modest cardiometabolic signal and is very safe, while high-dose EGCG extract capsules can cause liver injury.
The drink vs. the capsule
Green tea is rich in catechins, especially EGCG, antioxidant compounds linked to modest heart and metabolic benefits. As a drink, it’s one of the safer things you can consume regularly.
The problem starts when EGCG is concentrated into high-dose "fat-burner" and "antioxidant" extract capsules — a much larger dose than any cup delivers, and one with a real safety signal.
What the evidence shows
Good drink; be wary of the extract.
- Drinking green tea: a modest cardiometabolic signal — Meta-analyses of trials find green tea catechins produce a modest reduction in blood pressure, alongside small metabolic effects. Real, modest, and part of a healthy-drink pattern rather than a magic bullet. (emerging)
- High-dose extract can injure the liver — Expert reviews link high-dose green-tea extract (concentrated EGCG, especially taken fasting) to idiosyncratic liver toxicity — enough that a liver warning was added to its official monograph. Drinking tea is not the same as swallowing extract capsules. (note)
What we still don’t know
- How much of the benefit is the tea itself? Tea drinkers often have other healthy habits; isolating green tea’s specific contribution is hard.
- Who reacts badly to the extract The liver injury is idiosyncratic and unpredictable, so we can’t identify susceptible people in advance.
