Probiotics, honestly — strain-specific, not a cure-all
Probiotics are a huge market built on a small, specific evidence base. The honest headline: particular strains help particular problems, but "take a probiotic for gut health" is mostly marketing — and after antibiotics they may even slow your microbiome’s recovery.
Why "probiotic" is almost meaningless as a category
Probiotics are live microbes taken to benefit health, but effects are strain-specific: what one bacterial strain does at one dose for one condition tells you nothing about a different product. Lumping them together as "good bacteria for gut health" is like judging all drugs by the word "medicine".

Where specific strains genuinely help
Narrow, real indications.
- Preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea — Meta-analyses find certain strains (notably Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Saccharomyces boulardii) reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhoea by roughly a third. This is one of the best-evidenced uses. (established)
- Some IBS symptoms and specific situations — Particular strains help some people with irritable bowel syndrome symptoms and a few other defined conditions. The benefit is specific and modest, not universal. (emerging)
Where it’s oversold — and a real caution
- “Take a probiotic for general gut health” — In healthy people, there’s little evidence a daily probiotic supplement improves wellbeing, immunity or "gut health" in general. A benefit for one condition doesn’t transfer to a generic wellness pill. (hype)
- After antibiotics, they may delay recovery — A striking human study found that taking probiotics after antibiotics actually delayed the return of the native gut microbiome compared with letting it recover on its own — the exact scenario where probiotics are most heavily marketed. (note)
- Food sources are a reasonable default — Fermented foods (yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut) and, above all, a fibre-rich diet that feeds your existing microbes are a sensible, low-cost approach for most people. (note)

- Which strain, dose and duration for which person The field is far from being able to match a specific product to a specific person’s gut and goal.
- Do fermented foods beat supplements? Fermented foods look promising for microbiome diversity, but head-to-head evidence against supplements is limited.
