Alcohol, socially

For health, less is better and none is the safest — but a drink in a good social setting is a personal trade-off, made with open eyes.

If you drink tonight: alternate each drink with water, eat first, and set a number before you start.

Why it matters

The connection and enjoyment of a shared meal or celebration has real value. Alcohol itself has no health upside — so the honest move is to keep it modest and protect sleep, not to pretend it is medicine.

The evidence (strong)

The old "moderate drinking is protective" J-curve is now largely attributed to study design flaws (former drinkers counted as abstainers, healthier-drinker confounding). Current large analyses find no clear safe level for overall health, with risk rising as intake rises.

Where it's thin: Occasional low intake carries small absolute risk for most healthy people, and social connection has its own strong benefits — so this is a personal values trade-off, not a medical prescription. Individual risk varies (genetics, medications, history).

How to do it

Safety — read before starting

Do not drink with incompatible medications, in pregnancy, before driving, or with a history of dependence. Combining alcohol with sauna or cold plunge is dangerous.
