Connection & belonging

Strong social connection is one of the best-evidenced predictors of a long, healthy life — on par with major physical risk factors.

Start today

Reach out to one person you care about today — a message, a call, or a plan to meet. That is the practice.

Why it matters

Humans are wired for connection; loneliness acts as a chronic stressor on the body. Regular, meaningful contact protects mood, cognition and even cardiovascular health.

The evidence (strong)

Meta-analyses link strong social relationships with substantially lower mortality risk, comparable in size to quitting smoking and larger than many physical factors. Loneliness and isolation raise risk independently.

Where it's thin: Mostly observational (you cannot randomize friendship), but the effect is large, consistent and mechanistically plausible, so it is treated as a core pillar rather than a nice-to-have.
