NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest)

Guided deep rest or Yoga Nidra can feel restorative in the short term. Claims about a dopamine reset, accelerated neuroplasticity or broad clinical effects run ahead of the evidence.

Start today

Try 10 minutes of guided body awareness while sitting or lying somewhere safe. Keep your eyes open if closing them feels uncomfortable.

Why it matters

NSDR is a modern label for guided relaxation practices that often overlap with Yoga Nidra and body scans. They may support short-term relaxation; they do not replace sleep or established treatment.

The evidence (emerging)

Small, varied studies of Yoga Nidra and related guided deep-rest practices report improvements in some self-reported stress, anxiety, wellbeing and sleep measures.

Where it's thin: Protocols, populations and study quality vary substantially. Robust evidence for a “dopamine reset”, faster neuroplasticity, chronic-insomnia treatment or longevity benefit is missing.

How to do it

Safety — read before starting

Usually low risk, but stop if anxiety, dissociation, traumatic memories or discomfort increase. Do not use while driving or in any situation that requires attention.

Stop signs

Stop, open your eyes, orient to the room and move if you feel panicky, detached, trapped or increasingly distressed.
