Light is the master signal
Nearly every cell has a clock, coordinated by a master timer in the brain that’s set mainly by light hitting your eyes. This circadian system governs when you feel sleepy and alert, and it also shapes hormones, metabolism and body temperature across the day.
The single most powerful input is light: its timing, brightness and even colour tell your clock what time it is.

What the evidence supports
The mechanism is among the best-established in the field.
- Light timing shifts your clock — predictably — Light in the morning advances your clock (earlier), and light in the evening/early night delays it (later). This phase-shifting effect of light is one of the most robustly established facts in human circadian physiology. (established)

Where it matters most — and the hype

- Don’t over-buy the gadgets — Daylight and dimming your home in the evening do most of the work. Fancy light-therapy devices help in specific cases, but for most people the free version — go outside in the morning, dim screens and lights at night — is the lever. (note)
What we still don’t know
- The exact "dose" of light for each goal We know direction and rough timing, but the precise intensity and duration best for a given person and outcome isn’t fully pinned down.
- Long-term health effects of chronic disruption Shift work and circadian disruption are linked to metabolic and other risks, but how much correcting light exposure changes long-term outcomes is still being studied.
