Resveratrol is the cautionary tale of longevity science: a molecule that extended life in yeast and mice, launched a supplement industry, and then simply didn’t work in people. The honest headline: after more than 150 human trials, there’s no convincing clinical benefit.
From red wine to a failed promise
Resveratrol, a compound in red wine and grape skins, became famous when it activated "longevity genes" (sirtuins) and extended lifespan in yeast, worms and some mice. It was marketed as the reason for the "French paradox" and sold as an anti-ageing pill.
Then the human trials came in — and the story fell apart.
What the evidence shows
A clean example of hype meeting reality.
- Human trials are largely null — A high-dose trial (1.5 g/day) in men found no effect on insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, energy expenditure or inflammation. Across more than 150 human trials, results are mostly neutral, with no conclusive clinical benefit. (hype)
