Taurine, honestly — the 2023 headline vs. the human data
Taurine went viral in 2023 as a possible "anti-ageing" molecule. The honest headline: the animal data are genuinely interesting, but the human evidence is correlational at best — and a 2025 human study found taurine levels weren’t even linked to age or fitness.
What sparked the hype
Taurine is an amino-acid-like compound found in the body and in meat, fish and energy drinks. A 2023 study in Science showed taurine levels fall with age across species, and that giving taurine extended healthy lifespan in mice and improved health markers in monkeys.
Impressive in animals — but the headlines skipped the caveats.
What the evidence really shows
Strong in animals, thin in humans.
- Animal results are real and notable — In mice, taurine supplementation extended healthspan and lifespan; monkeys showed health improvements. The authors themselves called for human trials before drawing conclusions. (emerging)
- Human evidence is weak and partly contradictory — The 2023 human data were only correlational. A 2025 human study found blood taurine was NOT associated with age, muscle mass, strength, performance or mitochondrial function — undercutting the idea that taurine "deficiency" drives human ageing. What we still don’t know
- Does taurine do anything for human ageing? Unproven. We need randomised human trials, which the original authors explicitly requested. Until then it’s a hypothesis.
